How Much Epoxy Resin Do You Need for Flooring? Coverage & Calculation Guide

Calculating the amount of epoxy resin and hardener needed for a flooring project is important before purchasing materials. Buying too little can interrupt installation, while buying too much can increase project costs unnecessarily.

The amount you need depends mainly on floor area, application thickness, and the resin-to-hardener mixing ratio.

In this guide, we will show you how to calculate epoxy flooring material requirements using a practical coverage example.

How Much Epoxy Resin Is Needed Per Square Metre?

For the epoxy flooring system used in our calculation:

2 kg of epoxy resin + 1 kg of hardener covers approximately 1.5 m² at 2 mm thickness.

This means:

  • Total mixed material = 3 kg

  • Coverage = 1.5 m²

  • Material required per square metre = 2 kg of mixed epoxy

The 3 kg mixture consists of:

  • 2 kg resin

  • 1 kg hardener

So, for every 1 m² at 2 mm thickness, you need approximately:

1.33 kg of resin + 0.67 kg of hardener

Epoxy Resin Calculation Formula

To calculate the amount required for your floor:

Resin required = Floor area × 1.33 kg

Hardener required = Floor area × 0.67 kg

This gives you a straightforward estimate based on the stated coverage of 1.5 m² per 3 kg mixed system at 2 mm thickness.

Example: How Much Epoxy Is Needed for 10 m²?

Suppose you have a 10 m² floor and want to apply the epoxy at approximately 2 mm thickness.

Resin

10 m² × 1.33 kg = 13.3 kg of resin

Hardener

10 m² × 0.67 kg = 6.7 kg of hardener

Total mixed material

13.3 kg + 6.7 kg = 20 kg

Therefore, you would need approximately:

13.3 kg resin + 6.7 kg hardener = 20 kg of mixed epoxy

Epoxy Flooring Material Calculation Table

Floor Area Resin Required Hardener Required Total Mixed Material
5 m² 6.7 kg 3.3 kg 10 kg
10 m² 13.3 kg 6.7 kg 20 kg
20 m² 26.7 kg 13.3 kg 40 kg
50 m² 66.7 kg 33.3 kg 100 kg
100 m² 133.3 kg 66.7 kg 200 kg

These figures are based on the 2 mm application thickness and 1.5 m² coverage per 3 kg mixed system.

Why Application Thickness Matters

Epoxy consumption changes when the application thickness changes.

A 2 mm epoxy floor will require a different quantity of material from a thinner or thicker system.

For example, if a project requires a thicker build-up, more epoxy will be needed. Similarly, some flooring systems use several layers rather than one single application.

This is why you should not calculate your material requirements based on floor area alone.

You need to consider:

  • Floor area

  • Required thickness

  • Epoxy system being used

  • Resin-to-hardener ratio

  • Specified coverage rate

Don't Calculate Resin and Hardener as One Product

One common mistake is to calculate the total epoxy requirement and assume that the entire quantity is resin.

For a 2:1 resin-to-hardener ratio, the components are different.

For every:

2 kg resin

you need:

1 kg hardener

So if your calculation gives you 30 kg of mixed epoxy, that does not mean you need 30 kg of resin.

You would need approximately:

  • 20 kg resin

  • 10 kg hardener

Total = 30 kg mixed system

What About Surface Preparation?

Material calculations should also take the condition of the existing floor into account.

A concrete floor may require preparation before the epoxy flooring system is applied. Depending on the project, this can include cleaning, grinding, repairs or other preparation work.

The final flooring system may also involve multiple stages, such as:

  1. Surface preparation

  2. Primer application

  3. Epoxy mortar or repair work where required

  4. Scratch coat

  5. Topcoat

  6. Self-leveling epoxy where specified

Not every epoxy flooring project will require all of these stages. The required system depends on the condition and intended use of the floor.

How Much Will the Epoxy Flooring Materials Cost?

Once you know the quantity required, you can calculate the material cost.

For example, using the current material prices:

Epoxy resin: ₦14,000/kg

Epoxy hardener: ₦16,700/kg

For a 10 m² floor at 2 mm thickness:

13.33 kg resin × ₦14,000 = approximately ₦186,620

6.67 kg hardener × ₦16,700 = approximately ₦111,389

Estimated resin + hardener cost:

Approximately ₦298,000

This figure represents resin and hardener only. It does not represent the complete installed cost of an epoxy floor.

Labour, surface preparation, primers, additional coats, repairs, equipment and other materials can affect the final project cost.

How Do You Calculate Epoxy for a Large Floor?

The same calculation can be used for larger areas.

For example, for a 100 m² floor at 2 mm thickness:

Resin: approximately 133.3 kg

Hardener: approximately 66.7 kg

Total mixed epoxy: approximately 200 kg

For a commercial or industrial project, however, the final material quantity should be confirmed against the actual flooring system and manufacturer's technical information before purchasing.

Final Thoughts

Knowing how much epoxy resin and hardener you need helps you plan your flooring project more accurately and avoid unnecessary material shortages.

Based on the coverage used in this guide, 2 kg of resin + 1 kg of hardener covers approximately 1.5 m² at 2 mm thickness.

To calculate your requirement, start with your floor area and apply the corresponding resin and hardener quantities based on the specified coverage.
