How to choose the right welding machine

1. Match the amps to your electrode size

The thicker the electrode, the more current you need. Use this as a starting point and fine-tune on scrap metal first:

2. Check your power supply

Machines up to about 250A, such as the Kaierda ZX7-200N, run on normal single-phase 220V power. Most machines from 315A up, such as the ZX7-315N, ZX7-400N and ZX7-500, need three-phase 380V. Check what your workshop has before you buy, because a three-phase machine will not work on a single-phase supply.

3. Understand the duty cycle

Duty cycle is the share of a 10-minute period a machine can weld at full current before it needs to cool. At 60%, you weld for 6 minutes and rest for 4. A light-duty machine like the ZX7-200N is rated at 35%, which suits home and repair jobs. For all-day fabrication, choose 60% or higher, like the Maxmech MMA-400T.

4. Size your generator correctly

If you weld on a generator, check the machine's rated input capacity in kVA and choose a generator above it. For example, the Kaierda ZX7-200N is rated at 7.1kVA input. 5. Inverter or transformer?

Inverter welders, such as the Kaierda ZX7 series, are lighter, use less power and work well on generators, which is why most Nigerian welders now choose them. A tokunbo machine costs less up front, but you rarely get a warranty and you can't know how hard it was used. If you buy used, test it under load, check that the cooling fan works, look for burnt smells or loose terminals, and confirm the input voltage matches your supply.
